What value does memorizing all the U.S. Presidents when their names are literally at your fingertips via Google? This question is one that teachers grapple with on a regular basis as they look for the line between “memorizing” and “thinking.”

Authors Peter C. Brown, Henry L. Roediger III, and Mark A. McDaniel authored Make it Stick: The Science of Successful Learning to help guide teachers in the classroom and understand how students memorize and learn.

Their insights include practicing the “testing effect,” a principle that argues that students need “continual practice at retrieving newly learned content in order to make it available to them when they need it.”
