White House Honors Bowdoin’s Oliveira

Daniela Oliveira

Daniela Oliveira

President Obama named Bowdoin’s Daniela Oliveira as one of 102 researchers nationwide to receive the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE). The White House announced the award on December 23.

An assistant professor of computer science whose research focuses on computer security, Oliveira is the only PECASE recipient from a primarily undergraduate institution. She will attend a Washington, D.C., awards ceremony and receive a citation, plaque, and funding from the National Science Foundation, one of 9 federal agencies participating in the award.

The foundation selected PECASE nominees from among recent recipients of its prestigious CAREER Award, which Oliveira won in 2012. Final selection was up to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. The PECASE is “the highest honor bestowed by the United States Government on science and engineering professionals in the early stages of their independent research careers.”

I have never met Prof. Oliveira, but know from my granddaughter, one of her students and mentees, that she is a great person and teacher. Congratulations Prof. Oliveira for your good work and dedication and congratulations dear old Bowdoin for having her as a professor.

Thank you so much Dick Burns for your kind words. I believe you are Megan’s grandfather, am I right? She is a very bright young woman and you should be very proud of her.
