Fake Reviews Land 19 NY Companies in Hot Seat (NPR)

A sting operation involving a yogurt shop in Brooklyn was part of an investigation by New York’s attorney general that found companies had flooded ratings websites with fake consumer reviews.

 

Don’t believe everything you read on Yelp, Google Search or CitySearch. The New York Attorney General’s Office recently announced penalties for 19 companies that were attempting to manipulate consumers by writing fake reviews on their products.

NPR reports on the year-long investigation, which found companies paying freelance writers in places as far away as the Philippines and Bangladesh to post fake reviews, as well as using “advanced IP spoofing techniques” to avoid detection.
