Saturday Scoreboard

Polar PumpkinLive streaming interrupted Saturday by power failure - Problems at a Central Maine Power Company substation in neighboring Topsham, caused a power outage in three towns Saturday afternoon—including Brunswick. Most athletic contests were over by the time the entire region lost power at 2:21 p.m., but not football. The game went on, without a scoreboard, PA system, or live streaming from Northeast Sports Network. The power was restored by Saturday evening.

Here’s a look at Saturday’s results:

Cross Country: The Bowdoin College cross country teams opened their season at the USM Invitational Saturday afternoon. Senior Coby Horowitz took first place overall in the men’s race to propel the Polar Bears to a third-place showing in the 19-team field, while Lucy Skinner ’16 took fifth individually in the women’s race to help the Polar Bears take eighth.

Field Hockey: The Bowdoin field hockey team scored three second half goals to knock off previously undefeated Middlebury College 4-2 in the first Polar Bear victory over the Panthers since the 2011 NESCAC Championship. The eighth ranked Polar Bears (4-1, 2-1 NESCAC) win over the fourth ranked Panthers (3-1, 2-1 NESCAC) extended Bowdoin’s home win streak to 35 consecutive games.

Football: Middlebury’s McCallum Foote threw for 362 yards and three touchdowns to lead his team to a 27-5 win over Bowdoin in both teams’ season-opener Saturday at Whittier Field. It is the first win in Brunswick for the Panthers (1-0) since 2001.

Men’s Soccer: The Bowdoin men’s soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw Saturday afternoon against Middlebury College. The Polar Bears (1-2-1, 0-2-1 NESCAC) are still looking for their first win in NESCAC competition following the double overtime tie against Middlebury (1-1-1, 1-1-1 NESCAC).

Sailing: The Bowdoin sailing team is competing in regattas around the region this weekend. In-progress scores are available here.

Women’s Rugby: The Bowdoin women’s rugby team shook off a rusty start to pull away in a 25-5 win over Middlebury on Saturday afternoon. The Polar Bears (2-0) earn a win in the rematch of the first-ever New England Small College Rugby Conference championship game played last fall with the Panthers.

Women’s Soccer: The Middlebury women’s soccer team scored with under four minutes remaining in the game to down the Polar Bears 2-1 in a Saturday afternoon matchup. Bowdoin (3-1-1, 2-1-1 NESCAC) surrendered its first goal in over 390 minutes of play as Middlebury (3-1-1, 2-1-1 NESCAC) handed the Polar Bears their first loss of the 2013 season.

Volleyball: The Bowdoin College women’s volleyball team split a twinbill at Williams College Saturday, suffering a 3-2 conference loss to the Ephs before bouncing back with a 3-0 win against Western New England.

Bowdoin has entered a partnership with Northeast Sports Network to webcast home sporting events beginning with the 2013-14 academic year. Read more about the partnership.
