The Bowdoin First Varsity Men’s Four had high hopes for a deep run at the Henley Royal Regatta after bypassing the qualifying races. “But those hopes were dashed when University of Edinburgh beat us in the second half of the course [on July 3]. We held level with them to 1000 meters but could not match the higher stroke rate of the Scots coming through the second half,” said Head Coach Gil Birney. The team — Cal Brooks ’15 (stroke), Tucker Colvin ’13 (3 seat), Mark Endrizzi ’15 (2 seat), Chris Breen ’15 (bow), coxswain Jen Helble ’14, and alternate Trevor McDonald ’15 — traveled to England June 20 to train on the Thames and explore London. They recounted their adventures on the blog Bowdoin Rowing Henley 2013.
Birney, who thanked everyone for their support, said that attending the regatta was an honor and competing at an international level a challenge, and that the experience will reap benefits for the crew in seasons to come.
