Drawings of Neurons Reveal Education Level in Surprising Ways (The Atlantic)

A study in which undergraduates, graduate students and professors were told to draw a neuron demonstrates that knowledge and understanding are closely linked to creativity. While the undergraduate students’ drawings were highly detailed, labeled, and in a consistent orientation as though straight from the pages of a textbook, the professors’ drawings displayed a varied — and simpler — array of shapes and lines. The Atlantic describes the “central imaginative step” that may be missing and preventing students from acquiring a deeper level of learning.
