Slideshow: Recruiting Students for Maine Jobs

This year, 255 students checked out the vast array of jobs and internships offered by 42 Maine employers (including a dozen alumni) at the fifth annual Maine Employers Career Fair, according to Employer Relations Coordinator Sean Sullivan. No matter a student’s major, there was most likely an appealing opportunity for them, from working at a small publishing company or a media start-up to taking care of animals at an aquarium or doing oceanography research with scientists at a world-renowned lab. Jeremy Litchfield ’99, Atayne: "I like to stay connected with the Bowdoin community. We're based in Brunswick and have probably had 10 Bowdoin interns. We're a small start-up, so interns do sales and marketing, financial research, product development. When a student works for us, they get a glimpse of what the world is like."

Lauren St. Clair, Aura360 Ventures: "This is our first time here; we've heard good things about the career fair. We're looking for interns — we need qualified, talented people for the work we do in sports marketing."

Amanda Russell, Coastal Botanical Gardens: "As the manager of volunteers and guest services, I'm looking for an enthusiastic, talented Bowdoin student to intern with me in the volunteer department for the summer. It's a fantastic line on a resume: when you say you're a volunteer coordinator, people know you can work with anybody."

Matthew Redman, CIEE:

Matthew Redman, CIEE: "I'm looking to tell people about two opportunities: CIEE Teach Abroad Programs are opportunities for people to mostly teach English oversees, and there are positions to represent CIEE right here in Portland. It's a really young office; it's a fun place to work, especially for young people who can live downtown."

Nicole Poulton, Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences: "We have eight National Science Foundation research fellowships available over the summertime. We also have one position open (for an analytical chemistry technician) but we're expanding, so job openings can be updated on a quarterly basis."

Liz Charles, Maine Migrant Health Program: "We've had a positive experience working with Bowdoin students in the past so we're hoping to recruit Bowdoin students for this summer. We're recruiting for a paid summer staff position to promote pesticide safety training for migrant farmers."

Aimee Hayden-Roderiques, Maine State Aquarium: "Bowdoin has a good reputation for quality students coming out so it's a good match for me. I'm hiring educators and aquarists — people to talk about the animals and people to take care of them."

Pearl Ivey and Lisa Lutterman, Mölnlycke Health Care: (Lisa) We wanted to get integrated into the Brunswick community more since we're now based here. (Pearl) We're looking for longterm relationship building with the educators in the community.
