The inaugural train from Boston to Freeport and Brunswick arrived yesterday, Nov. 1, to much cheering, whistling and horn blaring. The Amtrak Downeaster will make twice-daily trips between Brunswick and Portland starting today. Officials and politicians, including U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe and U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree, rode the inaugural train and at station stops praised the numerous people behind the successful train extension, which took two years to complete. The Washington Post reports that the Downeaster just had a record year, with 528,292 passengers, and ridership is expected to grow by an additional 36,000 passengers with the expanded service.
