Video: Alumni Help Transform Grungy Space in Philly into Popular Plaza

Philadelphia’s “The Porch” Welcomes You! from Streetfilms on Vimeo.

Prema Katari Gupta ’00, director of planning and economic development at University City District, and Ethan Kent ’98, vice president of Project for Public Spaces, were both involved in the Philadelphia civic project that turned two street lanes and a bland sidewalk into a buzzing 55-foot by 500-foot plaza for pedestrians.

The Porch, located outside bustling 30th Street Station, now includes a free mini-golf course, benches, planters and movable tables and chairs shaded by umbrellas. Farmers markets, outdoor yoga and exercise classes, local concerts and beer gardens are all held on the space.
