Leon Leonwood Bean, born this day in 1872, went on to found the company that bears his name. Bean’s life and legacy are highlighted in today’s edition of The Writer’s Almanac with Garrison Keillor. L.L. Bean, the company, is celebrating its centennial this year.

Leon A. Gorman, chairman of the board of L.L. Bean, Inc., a member of the Bowdoin College Class of 1956, and trustee emeritus of the College, was awarded The Bowdoin Prize, the highest honor the College bestows upon one of its members, in 2010.
