With the election behind him, President Barack Obama now has the opportunity to define the nation’s role in the international community for years to come, writes career diplomat Christopher Hill ’74 in his latest opinion piece for Project Syndicate.

“[T]he U.S. needs to do all that it can, including showing some uncharacteristic patience, to help Europe emerge from its crisis,” writes Hill, formerly the  U.S. Ambassador to Iraq and Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia, and currently dean of the Korbel School of International Studies at the University of Denver.

“It also needs to continue to engage with Europe on international projects, including negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program – an issue of fundamental significance to international security.”
