Laurence Pope ’67 was retired after a 31-year career in the U.S. Foreign Service, and living in Portland, Maine. After hearing of the killing of ambassador Christopher Stevens in Libya, he told his wife he wanted to help out. She encouraged him to do it, according to an article in the Maine Sunday Telegram, which gives more background to the story reported here Friday. Pope will serve as top U.S. official in Libya until a new ambassador is nominated and approved by the Senate.
