In the 1960s, Bowdoin had a popular domestic exchange program with Morehouse College in Atlanta, Ga., the only all male historically black institution of higher learning in the U.S. The Morehouse College Office of Admissions recently added photos provided by Bowdoin’s George J. Mitchell Department of Special Collections & Archives to its Tumblr.

As a Spelman Graduate and Bowdoin mom; history/pictures like this make me feel an extra sense of pride. I have listened to the WBOR audio from Dr. Martin Luther King’s 1964 visit to Bowdoin a few times; and each time I am amazed by how a small school in Maine had the courage and foresight to seek to challenge and change injustice; and yes invite Dr. King to speak when many white schools of that time; would have barred him from their campus(es).
