It’s standing room only in Morrell Gym these days, at least on the lower level, owing to the removal of the wooden bleachers. They were disassembled earlier this week and taken away to be repurposed as flooring. Metal parts were bound for a recycling facility. New seating manufactured by Hussey Seating in North Berwick, Maine, will be installed in the lower level, while existing seating on the upper level is refurbished. Crews will also seize this break in athletic action to sand and refinish the floor, installing Bowdoin’s Polar Bear logo at center court, along with other marks.

THANK GOODNESS! I hope that the upper level will be fixed in a way that is SAFE for older people. This past winter I saw many,,many older people at the top struggling with the steps of the bleachers as well as the lack of railings. I sure hope those two elements will be addressed with the new work being done.
Great news as we can see the risers/steps in the stands will be much lower and not as steep as they were. It would be terrific if the same was done for the upper level, which can be be accomplished by adding intermediate risers as you are doing on the gym floor level. I believe I speak for many “older folk” who are loyal fans, but have found the stands in Morrell Gymnasium increasingly more difficult to ascend and descend as each year passes.
