Video: Jill Shaw Ruddock ’77 Founds the Second Half Centre (YouTube)

After graduating from Bowdoin, Jill Shaw Ruddock ’77 moved to New York City and worked in advertising and, later, in publishing for Inc. magazine and The Atlantic Monthly. In 1983, she moved to London to co-head the consulting firm of The Government Research Corporation and later joined the U.S. investment bank Alex Brown & Sons, becoming managing director of their London office in 1994. In 1999, she retired from finance and became involved in the theater world, fundraising and serving on boards, including ten years as a trustee of Bowdoin. Last year, with the publication of her first book, The Second Half of Your Life, in the United Kingdom, Shaw Ruddock has been credited with getting people all over London talking about menopause. Recently, she announced the creation of The Second Half Centre for successful aging at St. Charles Hospital in North Kensington, greater London—her idea to bring her book to life.

Ben Freedman ’09 Helping in Effort to Build Afghanistan’s Natural Gas Industry (Washington Post)

As an analyst with the Pentagon’s Task Force for Business and Stability Operations, Ben Freedman ’09 is helping to foster international investment in Afghanistan’s natural gas industry in attempts to bolster the war-torn country’s economy.

“We are introducing the global economy to Afghanistan, while also introducing businesses to Afghanistan,” says Freedman in The Washington Post. “Business people go over to Afghanistan, and it is an eye opening experience for them. They see the challenges, but also the opportunity. We are there to assist.”

Bowdoin Career Planning points out that Freedman is one of several Polar Bears at the Department of Defense hired by Noah Buntman ’08, and joins Catie English ’10 and Adit Basheer ’11 in the same department.

Bowdoin’s Polar Bear Hits the Slopes, Part I

The Bowdoin Polar Bear attacked Saddleback Mountain, in Rangeley, Maine, last weekend with the Bowdoin Outing Club Telemark Ski Class. In keeping with an inexplicable Telemark tradition, the BOC skiers end each season’s Tele program dressed in costume, and this year the Polar Bear couldn’t resist the fun. Keep an eye out for additional footage coming soon, as well as a full picture gallery by photographer Brian Wedge ’97.

Stopping by Woods (and Bowdoin) on a Snowy Evening (The Writer’s Almanac)

Robert Frost’s poem “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” was published on this day in 1923. The Writer’s Almanac with Garrison Keillor highlights the anniversary, noting that, “More than 20 years later, in 1947, a young man named N. Arthur Bleau attended a reading Frost was giving at Bowdoin College. Bleau asked Frost which poem was his favorite, and Frost replied that he liked them all equally.”

The Writer’s Almanac goes on to report that later, the poet invited Bleau up to the stage, and revealed that, in truth, his favorite was “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening,” saying it was based on his life.

The woods are lovely, dark, and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

Wayback Wednesday: What’s Happening at the Chapel?

Question: It’s Wayback Wednesday. Do we have any Bowdoin historians out there? Who knows what’s happening at the Chapel in this old photo?
