Necessity is the mother of invention, but some of these gadgets—check out the underwater cell phone, foot tanner, and canine genealogy kit—are items only a mother could love. They poured onto campus from all corners of the country, 372 of the 1,186 students admitted to Bowdoin’s Class of 2014. Bowdoin’s Open Houses gave these high school seniors and their families a power-boost of Bowdoin academics, athletics, arts, campus tours, student panels and social activities.
Go to your happy place, or at least to the nearest “fun city” as identified by a list that ranks New York City, no surprise, as most fun and Portland, Maine, at number eight. The seven cities ahead of Portland (Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Miami, Boston, Chicago, and New York) have an average population of 8.4 million people, so who says you can’t have fun in a small town? Bowdoin is one of only 10 institutions awarded a 2010 Clare Boothe Luce grant that opens pathways for women in science, mathematics, and engineering. The $214,000 grant will support multi-year research for eight Bowdoin women—four sophomores and juniors in 2010 and four the following academic year.
