What Makes a Portmanteau Word Stick? (New York Times Magazine)

What makes a “portmanteau” word (a verbal shorthand that blends two related words together to create one) either achieve widespread acceptance and usage (think “brunch” for “breakfast” and “lunch”) or find itself relegated to the linguistic scrapheap (“galumph” for “gallop” and “triumph”)?

Crocuses in February? Maine's Weather Gets More Bizarre

Governor John Baldacci declared a civil emergency in Maine following a wild Thursday night of wind and rain that swept the snow off the ground, flooded streets, felled trees, and left more than 100,000 people without power — mostly in York and Cumberland counties. Power was knocked out across sections of the Bowdoin campus as well, but had been mostly restored by noon on Friday, as the crocuses began to bloom outside Hawthone Longfellow Library!

Happy Birthday, Longo!

Saturday, February 27 is the 203rd anniversary of the birth of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (his friends called him “Longo”). Visit the Maine Historical Society Web site for a wealth of information on this illustrious member of the Bowdoin Class of 1825.

Treo the Black Lab Earns Top Military Honors (Fox News)

Not every dog gets distracted by squirrels. Treo, a nine-year-old black Labrador retriever, has earned the animal equivalent of the Victoria Cross from the British Army for sniffing out a whole lot of hidden bombs in Afghanistan.

Popham Memories May Last Longer Than the Beach (Maine Public Radio)

One of Maine’s most popular state parks is not-so-slowly being consumed by the Atlantic. Erosion at Popham Beach in Phippsburg is swallowing picnic tables, grills, and a whole lot of memories.

Sustainable Olympics

As the 2010 games in Vancouver begin to wind down, all Olympic eyes will shift to London—the host of the 2012 Summer Game. Organizers there promise to set new standards for sustainability. Urban and architectural historian John Gold will describe the initiative—along with some controversy—during a lecture next week at Bowdoin.

Bowdoin To Host Premiere of HBO Miniseries 'The Pacific'

Bowdoin will host a premiere screening of segments from the upcoming HBO miniseries The Pacific at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 4, 2010, in Pickard Theater, Memorial Hall. Kary Antholis ’84, president of HBO Miniseries, and Bruce McKenna, co-executive producer, will be on hand to speak about the miniseries and introduce the segments. The Pacific, an epic 10-part miniseries based on the true stories of three World War II marines, is the work of producers Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg, and Gary Goetzman—the team behind the Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning 2001 HBO miniseries Band of Brothers.

The private screening is open to Bowdoin students, faculty, and staff, and members of the Association of Bowdoin Friends. Admission is free, but tickets are required and are available at the David Saul Smith Union information desk. (Friends members may pick up tickets at the McLellan Building.)

Audio: A Whole Lot of Bowdoin vs Colby This Weekend

The Polar Bears will see a lot of the Mules this weekend as men’s ice hockey and women’s basketball write the latest chapters in a storied rivalry. Bowdoin Sports Information Director Jim Caton caught up with head coaches Adrienne Shibles and Terry Meagher as they prepare their teams for the big weekend. Click on the name of each coach to hear an audio clip (sorry, no pictures) of what they have to say.

Maine and The French Chef

Julia McWilliams of Pasadena, California, visited Maine for the first time at the end of World War II. It was an “everyone looking at everyone,” kind of trip, as Julia met her boyfriend’s family for the first time at their Mt. Desert Island home. The food was nothing fancy, but back then, the future Julia Child didn’t know all that much about cooking.
